WHAT IS THE GREATEST ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE IN NIGERIA? HOW CAN IT BE SOLVED AND HOW CAN IT BE RESOLVED
According to the oxford dictionary, the word issue simply means the problem that is connected to the condition which affect the behavior and development of an individual, people or the things in the environment.
The greatest issue facing the country today, it’s in the area of “the decline in the level of discipline and morality in the society”.
Discipline simply means the level of morality imparted into an individual while morality means the principle concerning right and wrong or good and bad.
Gone are the days when morality and discipline used to be virtue. Today, it is the exact opposite. It is a pity that a society which moral values where standard is fast deteriorating.
The major root cause of this problem can be traceable to most parents in our society. This is because, they have on their part neglected their responsibility of bringing up their children in a moral and well discipline manner. Many of them have lost their sense of moral decency and as a result, they could not impart good moral behavior on their children. They lay so much emphasis on material possession while neglecting the children. These neglected children, especially the male are forced into the society as armed robbers or cultists while the female on their part take prostitution as a full time profession.
Another major cause of the bad trend is the unchecked inflation that has nearly ruined the economy. The prices of most essential things like food, wears, books has gone beyond the reach of an average family. Even the price of school fees of various institution (universities) has gone so high to the extent that some parents have give –up in sending a child to the university. A lot of them even find it difficult to feed let alone buy a text book for a child in the home. Tell me how such parents will not accept bribe if tempted.
The problem is not limited to some public officials and the rich men around us. So many of them are dishonest, corrupt and unfaithful. Jobs are not given to deserving and competent applicants but to those who know how to offer large bribes and women who can sleep with those in charge. Bank loans are not granted to customers with good intention but to borrow and not pay back. The extravagant lifestyle of the rich has not helped the issue either. Majority of them acquire their wealth illegally and turn round to engage in wasteful spending.
The desperation of man to earn power is also one of the cause of this issue. A lot of Nigerians think that acquiring more wealth, will bring them recognition and influence. By their wealth, they wield more power in their community. Since our society celebrates wealth, people tend to place priority on someone’s wealth neglecting the moral aspect of the individual. This attitude has made a lot of Nigerians go in search of wealth by all means even if it has to be through illegal means.
Today, it is an open secret that the SSCE is fought with malpractices. In fact examination malpractice has become a bane in the environment. It portends grave danger for the Nation. Creativity and resourcefulness is hampered in a nation where examination malpractices thrive. Because, it leads to lack of focus in thorough learning and knowledge acquisition. That’s why the Holy scripture says that: The people perish for lack of knowledge.
Another cause of the issue that is facing this great nation is the lack of discipline in the level of waste disposal. This is to draw attention to the deplorable health condition in the environment. It is a common knowledge that most public roads are now refuse dumps. A visit to some health centres reveals a rise in the number of patients suffering from one form of lung disease or another. This is primarily as a result of poor disposal of wastes leading to the pollution of the environment.
Our nation, Nigeria which is also our environment has been regarded as a Nation with random nihilistic violence, insurgency, kidnapping, banditti; pollute and corrupt nation due to this major issue of “the general decline in the level of discipline and morality”. This will greatly affect this present generation if not properly dealt with.
The major way to avoid and to solve this issue is that there should be ethics and codes in the society and those who fall short of the required standard should be punished; and the big stick should be given to those dishonest unfaithful official in our society because what is good for the goose is good for the gander.
The media houses and the government at various levels should embark on a nation wide campaign to educate citizen against excessive desire for material wealth and indiscipline immoral lifestyle most especially on the part of the teenagers and youths in the country.
Students should be strictly discouraged against examination malpractices and should be taught the need to be honest.
To avoid health issues in the environment there should be an adoption of a more civilized and decent way of waste disposal.
We should stop revolving round the circle of “who will bell the cat that we may be set free from this deadly plague”. Let’s start from ourselves because “change begins with you and me”. This is why the saying goes “change begins the day you decide to change”.
In conclusion, lets be honest to God, ourselves and to the people around us. Because, it is only then we can avoid the issue of cheating, fighting one another and making the environment unsafe and insecure for us.
It is very urgent to tackle this issue to meet the demand of this Nation of becoming moral and discipline and to serve as a model for other country.
