She was about to drive out of her compound when a car blocked her way. She quickly hit her brake in a bid to prevent an accident. The car looked familiar but before she could connect the dots. The door of the car opened and out came Desmond who closed the door and started making his way towards her.
To say she was shocked would be an understatement. They hadn’t spoken in months and their last encounter wasn’t a pretty one so the fact that he was in her compound was hard to comprehend. She quickly rolled up her car window since she didn’t have anything to say.
He knocked on her car window “Beatrice, don’t be childish. We need to talk.”
She sighed and took a deep breath. If she wanted to get rid of him fast enough, she had to talk to him. She opened the car door not caring that he almost fell from the effect of being hit by the car door.
He quickly regained his posture while she leaned on the car.
“We need to talk.” He said while she just shrugged her shoulders and replied “No, you need to talk. I’ve said all I have to say.”
“Why?” He asked searching her face for any sort of emotion but he got none. “Why are you doing this?” He asked and showed her the invitation card.
She stared at the card in disbelief wondering how he got it.
“How did you get this?” She asked out of curiosity.
“That’s not important right now.” He dismissed her question.
She rolled her eyes “See I don’t have time for this nonsense right now. I have an important place to be. So if you could just be kind enough to move your car out of the way, maybe, just maybe the hate i feel for you would reduce just a little bit.” She said and turned to open her car door but he held unto her hand causing her to turn to face him.
“What the hell are you doing?” She was beyond pissed. He had the audacity to touch her with his filthy hands.
“Stopping you.” He replied indifferent to her attitude. He knew he deserved it but that didn’t bother him as much as what brought there.
Her eyes widened surprised by his boldness. She tried to use her other hand to free herself from his hold but it was to no avail. “Are you ok? Let go of me. I said let go. Are you mad?” She tried to wriggle out of his hold but he was too strong for her.
“Maybe I am. I can’t do this anymore Beatrice. I thought I could but I can’t.”
For the first time that day, she noticed how haggard he looked. He had dark circles under his eyes which told her that she wasn’t the only one having a hard time sleeping. She knew what he meant. He was tired of the facade of a marriage he was forced to put up with. Ada was the typical igbo girl his parents wanted for him and when they found out that she was with child, they wasted no time in forcing their union. No matter how hard Desmond fought against them, it was too late because she had already given up on him and there was nothing left to fight for. And thus no matter how her heart throbbed to hold him, he wasn’t hers to hold anymore and it hurt.
“What do you want from me? What else do you want? You have broken me already. Did you come here to finish what you started?” She was almost at the edge of breaking down and the mere fact that he was in front of her was not helping.
He finally let go of her hand and sighed “Why Philip? Why him? Why anyone for Christ’s sake? Is this your revenge? You want to hurt me? Well you have succeeded because it hurts like hell already .”
She stared at him incredulously wondering on how he could be so selfish. He could go on with his life but she could not.
“Really? You think this is about you? My world doesn’t revolve around you get that into your thick skull.”
He closed his eyes at the impact of her words before closing the space between them. He could see the shock in her eyes but she pretended to be unaffected.
“You are a married man for Christ’s sake and a soon to be father. “ she managed to utter but she didn’t know whether she was trying to convince him or trying to find a reason to prevent herself from doing something stupid. He placed his two hands on the car trapping her in between. He seemed unaffected by her words that’s if she could rely on the self satisfied smirk he had on his face because he had just confirmed that he still had an effect on her.
“You have a wonderful family.” She tried to remind him but he placed his second finger on her lips to shut her up.
“I won’t be the first person in the world to divorce his Wife. Neither would I be the first person in the world to have an illegitimate child. I gave up on us once cause I thought that would be the best for you and I. But I couldn’t bring myself to love another woman. I couldn’t love the same woman who deceived me and made me lose the love of my life. You are mine Beatrice and no matter how much you try to push me away, I will keep on coming back. If it’s going to take my whole life to earn your forgiveness, I will. This wedding is not going to push through. Mark my words. The only man you are ever going to marry would be me and I would make sure of that.” With being said, he moved away from her letting her catch the breath she had been holding since and tore the invitation card.
He stared her in the eye while she observed his actions in surprise “Mark my words.” He smiled and left.
While she stared at his retreating back while pondering on his words “Mark my words”.
